Richard Howe ran a workshop for members on "seeing", he briefly introduced us to theory of the left and right sides of the brain, in order to base a series of drawing exercises on the idea of concentrating on the visual and spacial faculties. The left side of the brain which is more verbal and symbol based would be suppressed
The drawing exercises started with 'contour' drawing of your own free hand without looking at the drawing as it emerges. Some fascinating results! We progressed to portrait drawing by copying an image upside down, drawing negative space, tonal drawing, tracing contours, and finally non-symbolic graphic communication.
Perhaps this better understanding of how our brain connects with the pencil will lead to some interesting results.
